Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Floods and Earthquakes?

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that standard homeowners insurance policies in Missouri do not cover flood or earthquake damage. Knowing what's excluded can help you avoid costly surprises after a disaster.
Flood Insurance
While homeowners insurance may cover many types of sudden water damage—such as a burst pipe—most do not cover flooding caused by rising water, including:
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Flash floods
  • Overflowing rivers or creeks
  • Rapid snowmelt
Flooding can happen almost anywhere, even outside of designated flood zones. That's why many homeowners choose to add a separate flood insurance policy for extra protection.
Earthquake Coverage
Most homeowners policies also exclude damage caused by earthquakes and other ground movement. This is especially important in Missouri, where the New Madrid Seismic Zone creates a greater earthquake risk than many people realize.
Earthquake coverage may be available as an endorsement or separate policy, depending on your insurance company and location.
Is Additional Coverage Right for You?
Every home is different, but flood and earthquake coverage may be worth considering if you:
  • Live near a creek, river, or low-lying area.
  • Own a home in southeast Missouri or another area with higher earthquake risk.
  • Want added protection against major, unexpected losses.
